Employees of the penal institution are often confronted with foreign detainees. Because of the language barrier, it is not always easy to explain to them all the rules of rights and obligations. In order to solve this problem, an interculturalisation process was activated. This exercise led to the design of a visual language that was tested with various inmates and employees of the prison. “Toonbeeld” is a handy tool for efficient communication with the detainee. A simple sign / referring to an image can support the message which one tries to convey, which results in a more humane detention.
